487th Bombardment Group (Heavy)
Group Markings

This drawing depicts the B-17G with the tail number 43-38893, also known as "Patches". Note, the first digit "4" and the dash are not actually seen on the tail. The plane was assigned to the 836th Squadron. The "2G" on the fuselage indicates that. Other squadron codes in the 487th are: 837th > "4F", 838th > "2C", and 839th > "R5". Within each squadron the single letter, "R" in this case, would be unique for each aircraft.
